Traffic Safety Products – Maintain Safety While Controlling Traffic
Motorists are often in a hurry to get to their destination and do not want their travel time to be extended because of delays caused by construction. Drivers often get impatient and try to do sudden u-turns and other risky maneuvers just to avoid having to go through a construction zone. There are different types of traffic safety products that can help direct and control traffic while roadways are being repaired or general construction is being done. If you work in construction or are out in the field repairing roads, you should consider a variety of products to help you direct traffic. One of the most dangerous situations is when a busy residential road is being repaired or expanded. The reason why this is dangerous is because drivers often do not expect to have to wait or drive in temporary lanes. Drivers simply go about their business and then they will have to suddenly slow down or stop. With the proper warning, drivers will have ample time to change lanes or reduce their speed. One of the first traffic safety products that should appear is an orange sign declaring “Construction Zone,” or “Workers Present.” This alerts drivers that the roadway is not as it usually is. If a driver is not familiar with the roadway, at least this will let him know that he is going to have slow down or stop. Another dangerous situation is when there has been a multiple car collision and there are disabled vehicles stopped in the middle of a busy highway. In this case, traffic safety products must be used so that the emergency vehicles can respond and get everyone out of harm’s way. Signs should be used stating “Emergency scene ahead.” These signs must be placed several hundred feet prior to the accident scene so that drivers have enough time to change lanes. Cones should be placed so that drivers know that a lane ends. If there is ongoing construction in an area, then heavy duty construction barriers should be used. These barriers can contain water or fluid to keep them weighted down. All traffic safety products should have reflective tape so that motorists can easily see them at night. There are local safety regulations regarding traffic control devices, so make sure to follow your local laws. Another common display for construction zones are cones and barriers with orange and white stripes. This is alerts drivers that this is a construction zone. Use orange colored cones and barriers consistently so that drivers can recognize that they are driving in a construction zone.
