Safety Vests – A Variety to Choose From
In the past, safety vests were only common among certain fields of work. Today, however, safety vests are used in a vast array of jobs, past times, and other every day uses. Law enforcement officers, construction builders, crossing guards, joggers, and even community service volunteers are among the many groups of people who now rely on these bright colored vests for protection. Though some people wear them of their own free will, it’s important to know that others are required by law to wear them. In 2008 the Worker Visibility Rule went into effect. This rule states that workers within the rights-of-way of federal-aid highways must employ the use of high-visibility safety clothing. Still there are other laws regulating their use as well.
Although they come in a variety of colors, the two colors which seem to be preferred by most people are green and orange. People have differing opinions as to which color safety vests are most visible and thus would provide more protection. Many people tend to lean towards the green as standing out more than the orange. But with certain background colors, the orange seems to provide a bit more contrast. Deciding which color to use is completely up to you, unless you’re regulated by a company rule or another law. Just remember to take into account the colors of the surrounding areas of where you’ll be wearing it.
These vests can be used day or night to protect the wearer from traffic or other safety hazards. Each vest comes with strips of light reflectors sewn onto the front and usually the back as well. Silver, yellow, or orange are commonly used as the colors for the reflector strips. The simplest mesh safety vests we carry are the sleeveless orange or green vests. These are light weight nylon mesh with a Velcro closure. Each vest has two vertical reflective stripes on the front and back. Though this is a very simple design, it will serve you well and protect you in hazardous situations.
One of our more detailed vests is the public safety breakaway vest. This is made from 100% polyester and has two vertical and two horizontal silver light reflectors on the front and back sides. These safety vests are particularly handy with their build in pockets. They contain a large radio pocket with Velcro closure, chest pockets, and two tabs that can be used for a radio or other communicative devices. Last but not least, this particular vest has a Velcro front closure on the zipper and has Velcro breakaway shoulders and sides. You can purchase these in blue, red, or green depending on your line of work. With the vast array of options available, it’s easy to find a vest that will suit your specific needs.
