Police Lights – How They’ve Become More Effective

They’ve evolved quite a bit since they first appeared on law enforcement vehicles. Sometime in the 1940’s police lights were introduced as a single light on top of the car. One of the earliest types used rotating mirrors with a solid light to give the illusion that the light was flashing. After that, strobe lights came into use. These lights flashed off and on extremely fast. There weren’t colored light bulbs so the coverings for the lights were different colors. That way the color that appeared to be flashing was actually just the color of the encasing. Now LED lights have become common for use on emergency vehicles.

Police lights have helped improved the job effectiveness of police officers and other law enforcement officers. With these lights on their vehicles, they are much easier for civilians to see. It’s also a way of establishing the authority of police officers since regular cars do not have the same lights. It sets them apart and makes them easily recognizable. It’s especially helpful during emergency situations. Currently, if there’s an emergency situation, a police car will flip on their lights to signal other drivers to get out of the way. The lights are easy to spot thus other drivers can move out of the way quickly. Imagine if they didn’t have those lights. It would be a nightmare for them to try and wade through the traffic.

There is such a large variety of lights available for emergency vehicles today. Some places do choose to use the older technologies like the strobe or rotating lights. But they seem to be less effective in many ways. Even the way they look kind of dates the car or looks unprofessional. Have you ever seen the older cars with the plastic coverings of the lights that are all faded from the sun? It seems important for a police agency to keep up a professional look, especially since their job is such an important part of the community. Today’s police lights really do beef up the appearance of the vehicles.

Today’s commonly used LED lights have come a long way compared to the older technology used. They are more energy efficient, a lot brighter, and come with a wide variety of choices. A lot of LED lights are used in light bars which are mounted onto law enforcement vehicles. Light bars come in many sizes and are also used for other emergency vehicles. Police lights have come a long way and the newest technology is amazing and effective.
